stop blaming your circumstances

Along with it being wedding season, it’s also jumping ship season – the time when many folks, including many of my friends, have committed to packing up their things in order to move on to new and exciting opportunities, where greener pastures await.
For those of you who are unhappy and are searching for those pastures or even want to begin searching for those pastures, recall the words of George Bernard Shaw in Mrs. Warren’s Profession:
“People are always blaming circumstances. I don’t believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can’t find them, make them.”
Was Mr. Shaw prescribing a life of entrepreneurship for those who were discontent in their professions over 100 years ago? Perhaps.
But I think what he was really getting at is the idea that you can and should succeed in spiteof your circumstances. Circumstances are facts that you just need to accept and deal with, however painful or annoying it might be to do so. Take a hint from Andrew Carnegie, who became a billionaire tycoon despite the fact that he and his family came to the States with barely a penny in their name.
Avoid making excuses for yourself or your situation and realize that you don’t need to rely on time or anyone else to make things better. In the words of Chris Guillebeau, author of The Art of Non-Conformity (a fantastic read):
“Derive security from your own competence.”
And continually improve your competence levels – through reading, training, certifications, additional education, and challenging yourself, especially by going after new opportunities in spite of your circumstances.
Be your biggest advocate, be in charge, and be bold.
